The clean energy transition is the economic opportunity of the 21st century – backed by a bold Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan, world-class innovation, and a stable regulatory environment as the first major economy to embrace the legal obligation to net zero emissions by 2050. From blade manufacturing in Hull to fusion energy in Nottinghamshire and carbon capture in Teesside, the UK is building the clean energy industries of the future.

Our Clean Energy sector includes seven world-leading, frontier industries:

  • Offshore wind
  • Onshore wind
  • Nuclear Fusion
  • Nuclear Fission
  • CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilisation & Storage)
  • Hydrogen
  • Heat pumps

Why the UK for Clean Energy Industries?

Catalytic public investment

The sector aims to double current investment levels leveraged through catalytic public finance via –  £1 billion Clean Energy Supply Chain Fund under Great British Energy (GBE) with £300 million already allocated to offshore wind, and a £544 million Clean Industry Bonus which could leverage up to £9 billion of private investment into sustainable supply chains. This compliments £5.8 billion committed by the UK National Wealth Fund for CCUS, hydrogen, ports, gigafactories and green steel; £2.5 billion for fusion energy R&D including STEP prototype plan in Nottinghamshire, and £14.2 billion to build Sizewell C in Suffolk which has a target of 70% of total contract value to go to UK suppliers.

A centre for climate investment

The UK has attracted £2.3 billion of clean tech VC investment in 2024. With established net zero commitments the UK’s world leading services is set to support the new demand for a wide range of climate, clean energy and environment services.

Inherent strengths and first mover advantage

The UK is home to the world’s largest fusion organisation (the UK Atomic Energy Authority) and a thriving private sector of more than 550 organisations. On CCUS, the UK’s favourable geology offers capacity to safely store up to 78 billion tonnes of CO2– creating a significant market for manufacturers in CCUS-enabled and electrolytic hydrogen production equipment of up to £2.2 billion export value to 2030.
