The UK Government has just introduced legislation to tackle the perennial issue of late payments. Measures include: 60-day maximum payment terms; further investigative and adjudication powers for the Small Business Commissioner; and mandatory interest on late payments.

Late payments cost the UK economy £11bn per year and cause the closure of 38 businesses every day. An average business spends 86 hours each year chasing late payments. This legislation seeks to tackle these issues and free small businesses to focus on growth not chasing unpaid invoices

Blair McDougall was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Business and Trade on 7 September 2025. He was elected as the MP for East Renfrewshire in July 2024.
