Funding model: Contracts for Difference (CfD)

The UK's onshore wind advantage

To decarbonise the power sector by 2030, the UK government has committed to radically increase onshore wind capacity in Great Britain to 27 to 29 gigawatts (GW), from around 15GW in 2025. Revenue support is available under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, with around 5.5GW of capacity secured across the 4 auctions that have taken place since onshore wind was re-introduced in 2021.

Following the removal of the de facto onshore wind ban in 2024, and the reintroduction of large onshore projects in the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) regime, the UK government published the Onshore Wind Taskforce Strategy. It contains 42 bold reforms designed to streamline the development lifecycle and accelerate growth. The UK government remains committed to expanding onshore wind capacity so businesses can continue to take advantage of project certainty and enhanced planning rules.

In 2025, the onshore wind sector in the UK saw £2 billion of public and private investment (BloombergNEF Energy Transition Investment).

Supply chains

Onshore wind is a priority area in the government's The UK's Modern Industrial Strategy 2025, reflected in the Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan. The UK hosts world-leading development and operations expertise and has a renowned onshore blade design, tooling and manufacturing footprint. Vestas and Siemens Gamesa facilities in operation, alongside a strong advanced manufacturing and composites sector, support the development of a scalable decommissioning and recycling sector. This is further enabled by government policy underpinning demand for onshore development.
