We are in a new era of threat, which means we need a new era for UK defence. This government is making the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War and making sure that investment creates good jobs in every part of the country.

The Defence Sector Industrial Strategy sets out how we are backing British industry, ensuring that our combination of world class platforms and fast-moving innovation will underpin growth, strengthen sovereign capability and build the resilience the UK needs in a more contested world. This is backed by the Defence Investment Plan that commits £15 billion investment to fund key equipment and technology.

What this means in practice:

  • £1 billion contract with Leonardo is supporting 3,000 jobs in Yeovil, building the next generation of battlefield helicopters.
  • £650 million investment to update the RAF Typhoon fleet is securing more than 1,500 jobs in Scotland and right across the UK.
  • £50 million Wales Defence Growth Deal is making it easier for Welsh SMEs to win defence contracts and develop cutting-edge autonomous technology.

These are not one-off decisions. They are part of a long-term plan — giving defence businesses the confidence to invest, hire and grow.
