Marlowe Theatre with Canterbury Cathedral
The new 4,850m2 Marlowe Theatre in the heart of the city’s historic core, contains a 1,200 seat main auditorium, flytower and orchestra pit, a 150 seat second space, cafés and bars, rehearsal, backstage facilities and admin offices.
An 8m high, reconstructed stone colonnade enwraps the glass triple level foyer uniting all public spaces and 2 auditoriums.
The Marlowe was opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex KG, GCVO on 4th October 2011.
The Marlowe has become one of the UK’s most successful regional theatres selling more than 2 million tickets in the first few years since it opened.
KWA were commissioned to design the project’s urban masterplan, the new civic centre itself, its interior spaces, and the new civic square.
The project has won many awards and featured extensively in the international media.
