Description

Type of contract:
Service

Title of the contract:
Creation of a map of geogenic and montane-historical soil data for the Harz region, Mansfelder Land

Brief description:
1 Introduction
In the Harz and Mansfeld Südharz districts of Saxony-Anhalt, large areas of soil contamination occur in areas influenced by mining history, such as Harzgerode and Mansfelder Land, which not only impair soil functions but also pose a threat to the protected goods concerned. The uppermost soil layers at some of these locations contain concentrations of various pollutants, such as arsenic, lead or cadmium, which exceed the respective test values according to the BBodSchV many times over and can therefore have a harmful effect on plants, animals and humans.
The detectable soil contamination is generally the result of the respective use and its duration, taking into account the originally existing near-surface rocks, the local immission situation and a possible flooding influence. However, the exact distribution of this soil contamination and current pollutant concentrations are not known for the individual areas. A comprehensive collection and processing of the data collected to date, e.g. in the form of a database or digital map, has not yet been carried out for the Harz Mansfelder Land study area.
2 Objective
The main objective of the project is the collection of existing data and information on soil contamination in and around former mining and ore smelting sites in the Harz Mansfelder Land region in the GIS and the subsequent intersection with relevant geodata on the main influencing factors for the areal representation of substance contents as a working and evaluation basis for deriving the need for further action.
In particular, the clusters mentioned in Annex 02. a, study areas with known or suspected hotspots, are to be considered. As a result, a summarizing digital map of geogenic and montane-historical soil data is to be created as a kind of preliminary soil contamination map for the Harz Mansfelder Land region.
3 Task definition
The assignment includes the following two work packages, WPs, which are to be completed chronologically and are explained in more detail below:
WP1: Research into relevant sources of information and collection and validation of data on geogenic and montane-historical soil pollution and its influencing factors, see Chapter 3. 1
WP2: Creation of a summarizing digital map of geogenic and montane-historical soil data, KgmB, with partial results and evaluation maps in the GIS and derivation of the need for further action for individual areas, see Chap. 3. 2.
3 . 1 Data research, collection and validation
In order to be able to better assess the distribution of soil contamination and current pollutant concentrations for the study area, the first step is to define the most important study areas more precisely and create the data basis for map creation, WP2, see Chap. 3. 2. This requires comprehensive research into the mining history of relevant localities, the exact location of possible sources of contamination, soil investigations that have already been carried out, area-related influencing factors and necessary additional information, followed by a careful suitability check of the recorded data.
3 . 2Creation of digital maps
When creating the BBK, data on pollutant levels in soils are combined with other relevant information and evaluated, and areal representations of pollutant distribution are generated. For this purpose, several working maps, e.g. on the derived substance concentrations and the relevant influencing variables, must be created for the study areas and respective assessment areas to be finalized with the client.
