Description
The University Hospital Halle (Saale) is carrying out the following procurement on behalf of the Medical Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg:
A high-resolution micro-computed tomography (µCT) desktop device is to be procured, which will advance our research in dentistry, particularly in the University Polyclinic for Tooth Preservation and Periodontology, and support translational research at the Medical Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. The device will be made available to researchers in the clinics in the laboratory of the University Clinic for Tooth Preservation and Periodontology at the Steintor Campus of the University Medical Center Halle.
The potential of micro-computed tomography as a non-destructive and high-precision imaging technique is becoming increasingly important in biomedical and especially dental research. High-quality research in biomedicine and materials science, especially with regard to endodontic research, requires precise three-dimensional imaging with a spectrum ranging from the entire tooth to high-resolution details. With a resolution of up to 2 µm pixel size, composite phases within the tooth structures as well as to inserted materials can be imaged and reconstructed in relevant, volumetric details. In addition, the instrument enables in-situ exposure to characterize mechanical or thermal stresses. A high-energy X-ray source (up to 110 kV) enables the visualization of dense structures and biomaterials of interest in dental research and other biomedical applications. A sealed X-ray source and high-quality detectors provide high-resolution imaging which, in combination with complementary software, generates reproducible, high-quality research data.
The availability of such a device will provide a range of new research opportunities and increased competitiveness in publications and grant applications focused on the Faculty of Medicine in Halle. We plan to develop in-depth expertise and know-how in data acquisition, analysis and dissemination in relation to complex dental and ear anatomies. Therefore, the device will also be used for research activities in the research group FOR 2804, where we will investigate projects in the field of endodontics and adhesive filling therapy. Cochlear implant technologies are analyzed in cooperation with the ENT department of the University Medical Center Halle.
