Description

The German Weather Service (DWD) is legally obliged to make forecasts of severe weather as accurately as possible and to issue corresponding weather warnings. To this end, the DWD already uses specialized meteorological procedures across the board to identify dangerous weather phenomena in observation data and model forecasts and to create forecast products based on this. This also includes warnings of volcanic ash and thunderstorms.
Unfavorable winds (gusts etc.) and turbulence are among the phenomena that pose a high risk to aviation. In the first few hours, there is currently no procedure that is capable of warning the entire airspace from cruising altitude to landing, covering the entire (3-dimensional) forecast horizon of 0-6 hours based on measurement data. The development of 3-dimensional wind nowcasting (forecast time of 0-2 hours) and its fusion with numerical weather prediction (NWV) data is intended to close this gap. The meteorological weather forecast should cover the forecast horizon of 2-6 hours. The transition from observation-based nowcasting (0-2h) to NWV (2-6h) should be as seamless as possible. This can greatly improve the warning of turbulence, gusts and other unfavorable winds and increase travel safety in aircraft.
In accordance with the departmental research framework, the project is strategically aligned with the following research priorities and fields of action. In the area of further development of digital applications, the fields of new, digital future technologies and improvement of meteorological and environmental data collection and forecasting, and in the area of resilient traffic and data systems & traffic safety, the areas of security in traffic and protection of critical infrastructures (KRITIS) as well as improvement of traffic safety.
