Description
The European Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) was introduced in 2000. One of its environmental policy objectives is to achieve good groundwater chemical status by 2027. It was transposed into German law via the Groundwater Ordinance of November 9, 2010 (last amended on October 12, 2022). This regulates the requirements for monitoring and assessing the chemical status of groundwater nationwide and requires regular groundwater tests to fulfill the obligations under the EU WFD to determine and assess the chemical status of groundwater. Monitoring includes groundwater sampling and analysis in groundwater bodies that are currently in poor chemical status according to the EU WFD. In addition, the hydrochemical conditions of the near-surface aquifers, particularly with regard to nutrient concentrations in the groundwater, are examined by the LfU Brandenburg in a state-wide, condensed monitoring program.
