Description
Concerning the localization system of the research vehicle, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based inertial measurement unit (IMU) has been one of the major sensors used in the aforementioned projects. Due to drastic advancements in Gyroscope technologies, e.g., reduced measurement drift, improved mechanical and temperature stability and ultra-fast gyro compassing, the MEMS-based system is no longer competitive for advanced localization research.
Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOG) have emerged as the sensing technology of choice for IMUs because of their high accuracy, stability and reliability are demanded in a compact, ruggedized and light-weight form factor. In order to maintain a competitive edge and deliver application-specific accuracy and resolution requirements demanded by emerging transportation automation projects, NRC-AST London wants to purchase one (1) FOG IMU.
