Description

As part of the Waikato and Upper North Island voltage management (WUNIVM) investigation, Transpower has identified the need to install series capacitors on the BHL-WKM circuits (refer to Figure 1 above). The primary purpose of the series capacitors is to allow higher power transfer into the upper North Island region by reducing the impedance on the BHL–WKM circuits, without overloading the lower capacity parallel circuits. The series capacitors will then reduce voltage drop along the circuit, providing an increase in the static and dynamic voltage stability limits.
The series capacitors will be supplied and installed under a design and build contract with the Supplier. Transpower will be responsible for making all aspects of the site ready for installation of the series capacitors through a separate enabling works contract including civil, transmission line and electrical work not included in the design and build contract. This enabling works contract will require an early provision of design information from the Supplier. The supply of the series capacitors is subject to approval by the NZ regulator, which is not expected until mid-2020 so the award of the contract to proceed with manufacture is likely to be 11 months after tenders close.
