Background
A complete high purity germanium gamma ray detection system consists of a background radiation shield, a detector, preamplifier (typically incorporated in detector housing), a cooling system (dewar, mechanical cooling, or combo), an electronics interface, and a computer system to analyze data. This requisition focuses on the cooling system of the detector.
The Winchester Engineering and Analytical Center (WEAC) is the sole federal laboratory performing the analysis of radioactivity in food products. WEAC relies on gamma spectrometry to screen and analyze foods for contamination. These detectors require cooling to liquid nitrogen temperature necessitating the use of a nitrogen dewar, electronic cooling, or a nitrogen recycling hybrid cryostat. The advantages of the hybrid cryostat, include low power consumption, reduced nitrogen consumption, and liquid nitrogen redundancy, make them the best choice for use at WEAC. This project will reduce liquid nitrogen consumption and maintenance time refilling traditional dewar cooling.
Objectives
This acquisition is to purchase two (2) liquid nitrogen recycling hybrid cryostat with the option to purchase a second unit. The hybrid cryostat(s) will effectively cool High Purity Germanium Detectors with less liquid nitrogen consumption. The new cooling systems will allow WEAC to replace the old dewar cooling systems.
Scope
The Government expects to procure two liquid nitrogen recycling hybrid cryostats with the option to purchase a second unit to replace traditional dewar cooling. Installation will be performed by the Contractor.
