Description
As part of the monitoring in the European bird sanctuaries of Saxony-Anhalt, breeding occurrences of valuable breeding bird species are to be recorded in the EU SPA Black Elster Estuary (area size 3,921 ha) (Lot 1) and in the EU SPA Salziger See and Salzatal (area size 649 ha) (Lot 2) in 2025.
The survey of breeding birds relates to the entire area of the SPA. In addition to the six standard mapping surveys specified for each habitat type (Südbeck et al. 2005, p. 116) in the morning hours, three twilight and night surveys in suitable habitats should also be carried out to record rails, bitterns and owls. Night surveys in areas that are difficult to access can be supplemented by the use of listening boxes after consultation with the client. These can be provided by the client, and the surveys for all species are to be carried out throughout the area, with surveys of birds of prey and stork species to be carried out on the basis of nest searches.
The UNB Wittenberg and the administration of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve will be informed of the mapping by the WG. Concrete coordination on site is to be made directly by the contractor.
Mapping is to be carried out in the field using the NaturaList app via the "Private line mapping" module (or a corresponding NaturaList alternative), if necessary using alternative recording programs. Details must be clarified with the client in advance of the mapping. From the individual survey data recorded with NaturaList, territories are to be formed (if necessary with the help of third-party data) according to the recommendations in Südbeck et al. (2005) and the corresponding breeding season codes assigned to them. The territory centers are then to be digitized precisely in MultiBaseCS. The parameters to be entered in MultiBase must be agreed in advance with the client.
As part of the mapping, photographic documentation of characteristic bird habitats and impairments of the area must be prepared and submitted digitally to the client.
General disturbances and impairments identified in the bird sanctuary during the mapping that may affect the breeding birds in the area (e.g. grassland conversion, early mowing events, forestry measures, tourist disturbances, etc.) must be documented as precisely as possible. Any interventions, disturbances, etc. that conflict with the Natura2000-LVO should be reported promptly to the AG and the responsible UNB. Occurrences of species for which nest protection zones are to be set up under Natura2000-LVO (corncrake, meadowlark) must be reported to the responsible UNB with their exact location as soon as they are found so that appropriate protection zones can be set up.
In addition to the surveys of the current population, data on the breeding occurrence of the species after the time of the initial inventory in 2007 should be researched as far as possible and used to illustrate the population development of the species.
For the annual bird monitoring reports, a manuscript on the results of the mapping with tabular and cartographic representations as well as photo documentation should be prepared (approx. 10-15 pages). Structure: Brief description of the area, methods, results of the current breeding bird mapping (in tabular form and with maps), population trends of the species, assessment of habitat quality, disturbances and impairments in the area in relation to the conservation objectives of the area and the requirements of the Natura 2000-LVO.
For detailed explanations of the survey method, the list of bird species to be surveyed and other information, Annex 02_Description of services is indispensable.
