Talent success stories: Tim Chong
Founder of fintech Yonder, Tim chose London over Shenzhen and New York for its global outlook, deep talent pool, strong fintech ecosystem, and enabling government support via initiatives like the Global Talent Taskforce.
What made you choose to relocate to the UK? What alternatives did you consider?
I considered Shenzhen, New York, and London as top global fintech hubs. London stood out for its international outlook, unlike New York which tends to be US-centric. For a fintech with global ambitions, London was the best fit.
What attracted you to the UK’s fintech ecosystem?
The UK has a strong track record with companies like Wise, Revolut, and Monzo, creating confidence and ambition in the sector. London also offers deep talent from high-growth tech firms, plus everything in one city including regulators, engineers, capital markets, and cultural relevance.
How important was government support versus other factors (talent pool, funding, market access) in your decision?
Talent and access to capital were the biggest drivers. The UK also offered market access and strong regulation. Government support, through initiatives like EMI, EIS/SEIS, and Tech Talent Visas, played an enabling role.
What specific problems did the Global Talent Taskforce help you solve? What would have happened without their support?
During a critical growth phase, I faced ILR processing delays while needing to travel for business. The Taskforce case-managed the situation, ensuring continuity for me and my family. Without their help, uncertainty and disruption would have significantly impacted the business.
