Description

EPR places legal responsibility on producers for the environmental impact of their products and packaging across their full lifecycle, including collection, recycling, and waste management.

Recent EU legislation - notably the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduced in July 2024 and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduced in February this year - will significantly affect how products are designed, packaged, and sold in the EU. While these regulations will be introduced gradually, EU Member States continue to apply their own national EPR rules in the interim.

This has resulted in a fragmented and complex compliance landscape, with differing requirements across the EU for registration, reporting, labelling, scope, and costs. As a result, many thirdcountry businesses, including those based in Great Britain, face uncertainty about their obligations when exporting to the EU.

GB packaging manufacturers and e-commerce sellers are particularly impacted by EPR so will benefit from this step-by-step guide to ensuring compliance across the major EU Member States, pending the gradual implementation of PPWR and ESPR.
