HR Wallingford is an independent marine engineering consultancy and research organisation serving the offshore renewables, energy, and infrastructure industries. Established in 1947, HR Wallingford has over 75 years of experience in physical modelling and has purpose-built facilities to model hydrodynamic forces.

The company solves complex marine engineering challenges related to offshore wind foundations, substations, and cables. It specialises in scour protection modelling, scour protection design, sea bed morphodynamics, and metocean modelling. It is also tank testing new designs of floating wind turbine foundations and developing numerical models for future floating foundation designs.

HR Wallingford owns one of the largest modern physical modelling facilities in Europe. This includes wave basins, a fast flow facility, wave flow flumes, hydraulic structures, a river floodplain modelling area, and specialist facilities for tsunami simulation. HR Wallingford is also a global supplier of specialist equipment for physical modelling laboratories.

Industry track record

HR Wallingford has nearly 3 decades of experience in fixed-bottom offshore wind and is expanding into floating offshore wind. It has worked on hundreds of offshore wind projects including over 90% of the UK’s wind farms, as well as offshore wind farms in the rest of Europe, US, and Vietnam. In Taiwan, HR Wallingford has provided metocean and current modelling, underwater noise modelling, sea bed morphology, and scour protection modelling.

HR Wallingford has also designed and manufactured specialist hydraulic laboratory equipment, including wavemakers, wave absorption beaches, carriages, and dynamometers for wave tanks in South Korea and Taiwan.
